Terry Pratchett Background
Sir Terence David John “Terry” Pratchett was born on 28 April 1948 in Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, England. He is now 63 years old. His parents were David and Eileen Pratchett and they were originally from Hay-on-Wye,which is a tiny market town which can be found in the Black Mountains of the Welsh Marshes
Terry Pratchett went to school at High Wycombe Technical High School. He went to that high school because he thought woodwork would be more fun than Latin He had an interest in radio, computers and astronomy and he owned a telescope. He wanted to be an astronomer, but he did not have the mathematical skills to be one. His first job was a journalist and he started working for the Bucks Free Press at the age of seventeen.
He married Lyn Purves in 1968 at the Congregational Church in Gerrards Cross. His daughter, Rhiana, was born in 1976 and he dedicated a few of his books to her. In 1998 he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to literature On the 18th of February 2009 Terry Pratchett was knighted at Buckingham Palace. He is now also a professor at Trinity College and Dublin University. He has an interest in natural history and he has a greenhouse of carnivorous plants. He has a rare form of early onset Alzheimer’s disease that makes the back part of the brain shrivel.
Terry Pratchett Writing History
Terry Pratchett’s first story that was published when he was thirteen years old and it was called The Hades Business and it earned him enough money to buy a second hand typewriter. In 1996 he was the top selling author in the UK. He has sold over 65 million books. He has written on average two books a year. He uses a lot of characters from ancient history, popular culture and classic literature. One of his first influenses was The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. He also uses a lot of modern day things in his novels such as post, journalism and modern banking.
Terry Pratchett published his first book in 1971 and it was called The Carpet People. He is famous for his Discworld series of books that contains over 30 books. The Discworld is a flat world carried on top of four elephants, which walk on top of a giant turtle. His first Discworld series book was published in 1983. After his 4th Discworld book he quit his job and focused only on writing.
